OUR GOALS

Focusing on strengthening the communities we live in, instilling meaningful life lessons through education, raising awareness, and encouraging positive self-esteem to our children. Providing education and information to adults; encouraging them to partner with us in this endeavor.

Our Mission

We are strengthening families in the community. We do this by instilling meaningful life lessons, providing support groups and services.

We target youth in areas of socialization, culture, and pride with the hope of preventing our children from becoming a part of the juvenile criminal system as well as helping to reduce recidivism amongst those that have been system involved.​​

Who Is Isabahlia Martin Ortiz?

​

Isabahlia Martin Ortiz was a single mother of eight children who migrated from the country of Aruba to the City of New York in the year 1965. She worked as a domestic worker until 1976 when she then went back to school to acquire her LPN degree. Isabahlia Martin Ortiz worked as a nurse in a nursing home until 1988 when she later on retired. On any given day, Mrs. Ortiz provided supportive services to her community through expressing her love of cooking, baking, and volunteering. During her free time, she volunteered at local senior centers where she taught arts, crafting. She shared her affections for children and families in the neighborhood through her commitments and mentoring. In her memory “The Isabahlia Ladies of Elegance Foundation Inc.” was created. ILOEF, INC. is a non- profit organization that serves the community of Brownsville and surrounding neighborhoods.

Meet the Team

The Isabahlia Ladies of Elegance Foundation (ILOEF) is powered by a deeply rooted, community-centered team of lifelong Brownsville leaders, youth advocates, and urban agriculture practitioners dedicated to transforming local systems through hands-on service and intergenerational empowerment. Led by founder Brenda Thompson-Duchene and supported by seasoned organizers and program builders like Yusef Webb and Taurean Lewis, the team brings decades of experience in community engagement, food justice, youth development, and nonprofit operations. Together, they combine lived experience, professional expertise, and unwavering commitment to move Brownsville families toward wellness, opportunity, and long-term stability.
